Blue Lace Agate is a rare variety of Chalcedony. It's characterised by distinctive blue and white bands. Mining Blue Lace Agate was never easy. Located deep inside a narrow trench, it was initially extracted by hand. As recently as 2015, miners climbed down chain-ladders to gain access.
Having been removed with chisels and jackhammers, the stone was raised to the surface in buckets. Chains attached the buckets to a crane at the side of the pit. For this reason, large pieces of Blue Lace Agate are extremely rare.
Since 2017, no Blue Lace Agate has been excavated from the deposit, and visitor access is forbidden.
